Coronary Angiography is a procedure to examine the blood vessels of one’s heart in order to diagnose suspected heart disease, or confirm the results of other diagnostic tests. While the procedure itself is not difficult or long, it is quite expensive in many European countries which, additionally to the waiting lines, makes many people consider having it performed abroad.

Coronary Angiography is a simple procedure that can take anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour — however, in many countries, the time people have to wait and the price they need to pay for it, makes them turn to hospitals in other countries to have the Coronary Angiography procedure performed. According to Andrius Jonutis, the General Deputy Manager at the General Private Hospital in Lithuania — Kardiolita: “We perform Coronary Angiography by inserting a catheter through the arm, and this makes a huge difference compared to having it inserted through the thigh artery — because this way the procedure becomes much easier for the patient and they can walk without any problems on the same day. We have patients coming to our hospital from different countries — not only do they save time by taking just one day off their schedule, but they pay at least 2-3 times less than in their home country.”

Coronary Angiography Procedure

The procedure is fairly simple, although, invasive. Using local anaesthesia, the doctor inserts a catheter into the arm artery which is then directed to the heart. Then a special dye is passed through the catheter which lets the doctor see any blockages and narrowed areas on the arteries. This is one of the most effective ways for the doctor to see any potential risks and suspect any potential heart disease. At Kardiolita, the stenting procedure might be performed during the same coronary angiography procedure, without the need to come back again to perform the stenting of the arteries – which is a great advantage compared to many other hospitals where patients would need to have two different procedures performed.

Coronary Angiography Cost

The cost for the Coronary Angiography differs from hospital to hospital, and from country to country. For example, this diagnostics procedure can cost about 3000 Eur in the UK, while in Lithuania it costs 1000 Eur at the Private General Hospital Kardiolita. The savings are quite significant thus leading so many people go abroad for this procedure.

Coronary Angiography Complications and Recovery

Complications are rare with this procedure. The most common complication is a haematoma — which is a build up of blood under the skin in the area where the catheter was inserted. Because at Kardiolita Private Hospital catheter is being inserted in the arm artery, even if the haematoma builds up, a person can walk the same day without any problems.

Despite the long distance and a different culture, more and more people in the UK and Europe choose to go to another country for their medical treatment and have their orthopedic surgery abroad.

Orthopedic Surgery Abroad: Knee Replacement Surgery, Hip Replacement Surgery:

Anyone waiting to get a medical treatment in a national hospital knows that there will be waiting times, and sometimes one would need to wait longer than expected. Waiting times, especially for orthopedic surgeries, are the biggest reason why people choose to go abroad for their surgery. Orthopedic surgeries are in the list of the most popular surgeries that people in the UK and other European countries go abroad for.

Orthopedic Surgery Abroad: Why People Go Abroad For Knee and Hip Surgery:

First, they are less expensive in other countries, sometimes being as much as 50% cheaper than in the UK. For people paying out of their pocket, this is a big factor. There are also medical insurance companies that cover medical treatment in another country as well — and for people who have that type of coverage, going abroad is extremely attractive because of the very short waiting times. In some countries, one can get a surgery scheduled next week instead of having to wait for sometimes 3-6 months in the UK.

According to doctor orthopedist Albertas Aukstikalnis at Kardiolita – the leading private general hospital in Lithuania: “One can get any type of orthopedic surgery performed in our hospital. We have patients coming to us after traumas and those who are suffering from chronic degenerative diseases — and we can help every one of them”.

The process of going to another country for a surgery is not as difficult as it may look. „If we can get the diagnostics information from the patient, we can set the date for the surgery and have it performed in about a week’s time. If not, we will do full diagnostics here in our hospital, and then perform the surgery.

When that is the case, there are no extra charges for the diagnostics, just for the surgery. We also take care of the rehabilitation, and bring the patient and the accompanying person to the airport when ready to go home, so their only worry is to put all their energy into healing, not into taking care of organizational things.” — says Andrius Jonutis, General Deputy Manager at Kardiolita, the leading private general hospital in Lithuania.

Nigeria: Earlier this year, a world class hospital was commissioned in Akwa ibom state by the presiding state governor but a couple of month ago the same governor travelled abroad for medical treatments following a car crash .

“They build hospitals for the less privileged while they go abroad for treatments,” one man laments

How morally correct is this? BattaBox presenter Odunayo asks Nigerians on the streets of Lagos

“Who are they deceiving?”

Should politicians go abroad for treatments or use the (sometimes below average) medical system in Nigeria? Who’s money are they spending? These are some of the questions Nigerians are asking.

“There is nothing wrong, as long as they can afford the hospital bill,” replies one woman

Should there be a law that stops Government officials from travelling abroad for treatments?
